Post-Election Landscape
Following a 2018 gubernatorial election that drew national attention as Republicans lost 13 seats in the Georgia General Assembly, Democrats made a united effort to flip control, particularly in the House. However, despite continuing demographic shifts in former Republican strongholds and a record voter turnout, Democrats fell far short of flipping the necessary 16 House seats and 8 Senate seats in the November election. In January 2021, Georgia held runoff elections for both U.S. Senate seats between Democrat challengers Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock and incumbent Georgia Republicans David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler. Ossoff and Warnock were elected, giving Democrats control of the U.S. Senate.
