Texas Election Results

Post-Election Landscape

Texas remains a solidly red state. Each party flipped one seat, meaning there was no change in the makeup of the House. In the Senate, Democrats flipped one seat by defeating Republican Senator Pete Flores who won the seat in a surprise victory in a special election two years ago. Four Republican Supreme Court justices were on the ballot, and all four won re-election with around 53% of the vote.

Pre-Election Balance of Power

  • Governor: Greg Abbott (R)
  • State Senate: 12 Democrats – 19 Republicans
  • State House: 67 Democrats – 83 Republicans

 Post-Election Balance of Power

  • Governor: Greg Abbott (R)
  • State Senate: 13 Democrats – 18 Republicans
  • State House: 67 Democrats – 83 Republicans

 Impact on Texas Consumers

  • The final impact of the election will not be clear until a new speaker is elected by the House and committee chairs and members are appointed.
  • Commercial auto lawsuit reform efforts will be a major challenge in the next session.
